Evan Williams Straight Bourbon Whiskey

I’ve realized there are quite a few classic American bourbons I’ve never reviewed, so let’s change that, starting with Evan Williams Bourbon.

Evan Williams founded Kentucky’s first commercial distillery along the Ohio River in Louisville back in 1783. Today, the bourbon most commonly known as “Black Label” is produced by Heaven Hill Distillery.

Aged around 4 years, Evan Williams Bourbon features a mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley. Let’s get into the notes.

Nose: Oak, vanilla, and sweet corn

Palate: Oak, brown sugar, caramel, and pepper

Finish: Warming spice, pepper, and a touch of smoke

ABV: 43% | Cost: $15 (we bought a 50ml bottle for $0.99)

Plain and simple, this is a classic bourbon. It isn’t particularly complex, but that’s not a bad thing. For the price, you’re getting a lot of value in the bottle. If you’re looking for an easy-drinking bourbon that works just as well neat as it does in a cocktail, this is a solid choice.

On the palate, I get plenty of brown sugar and a light caramel sweetness, with a touch of pepper providing balance. That pepper note carries through the finish, where a hint of smoke begins to emerge toward the tail end of the sip.

At around $15, it’s hard to find much to complain about. It could easily be a daily sipper, and it’s a great reminder that not every whiskey needs layers of complexity to be enjoyable. Evan Williams Black Label is an affordable, reliable bourbon that could deserve a spot on just about any home bar.
