Every now and then, you need a whisky that’s not only easy to sip but also versatile enough to hold up in a cocktail. Honestly, I think Aberfeldy 12 Year is one of those whiskies. But before I get into this expression, let’s talk a little about the brand.
Aberfeldy was founded in 1898 by brothers John and Tommy Dewar. Yes, the same Dewars behind the iconic Dewar’s White Label blended Scotch. The distillery was originally built to supply whisky for their blends, and in 1972 it expanded to meet growing demand. It wasn’t until 2000 that Aberfeldy 12 Year was released as a single malt, and in 2014 the brand introduced its core range.
This expression is matured in a combination of sherry, bourbon, refill, and re-charred casks. Now, let’s get into the whisky itself.
Nose: honey, fruit, and warming spices
Palate: vanilla, lightly sweet, cinnamon, and baking spices
Finish: light spice with a subtle touch of smoke
ABV: 40% | Cost: $39-$45
This is such an easy-drinking whisky. It’s light, crisp, approachable, and, to me, a great entry-level dram. The palate delivers notes of vanilla, gentle sweetness, and spice without being overly complex. Toward the finish, there’s a faint whisper of smoke, not peat smoke, but just enough to make an appearance before quickly fading away.
What I love most about this whisky, beyond how approachable it is, is the value. At this price point, you’re getting a quality single malt that works equally well neat or in a cocktail. In fact, I think it would make an excellent base for whisky cocktails because of its balance and easy-drinking nature.
Overall, I’m really impressed with this expression, and it’s definitely encouraged me to explore more of the distillery’s range. If you’re looking for a whisky that’s approachable, affordable, and enjoyable, this is a fantastic option to try.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
