Toucan Old Fashioned Cocktail

This brand caught my eye because it’s not your typical ready-to-drink cocktail that you simply pour over ice and serve. With this one, you get to play bartender for a minute, no fancy equipment required.

Their whole concept is that cocktails should taste as fresh as the moment they’re made. As for the name Toucan, it appears to be inspired by two factors: the company’s logo features a toucan bird, and the product itself comes in two cans. The name is a clever play on both elements. For the Old Fashioned, the top can contains Kentucky Straight Bourbon at 51% ABV, while the bottom can holds the mixer: aged cherry, orange zest, aromatic bitters, and French oak simple syrup.

The process is simple: separate the cans, remove both lids, pour the bourbon into the mixer can, add ice, snap the top can back on, and give it a good shake.

I paid $10.99 for one Toucan. Since each one makes two servings, that comes out to about $5.50 per cocktail, which is reasonable compared to ordering one at a bar. But the real question is: is it any good?

Honestly, this was much better than I expected and it was fun to make. The first thing I noticed was the orange. Even my husband’s immediate reaction was, “This is orange-forward,” and I completely agreed. To both of us, the orange zest really stood out. I do enjoy a good orange note in an Old Fashioned, but here it was a little stronger than I would have preferred.

What I appreciated most was that it wasn’t overly sweet. Every now and then I picked up hints of cherry, spice, and some subtle oak notes that added a nice balance. While I probably wouldn’t buy the Old Fashioned again specifically, I would absolutely buy from this brand again because I’m curious to try the rest of their lineup.

The cocktail tasted fresh, the preparation added a fun interactive element, and overall, I thought it was a solid experience.
