Bully Boy Bourbon Whiskey Finished in a Maple Syrup Barrel

Last month, we visited the Bully Boy Distillery to sample and purchase their Bourbon Finished in a Honey Barrel. This past weekend, we went back to try their Bourbon Whiskey Finished in a Maple Syrup Barrel.

We love supporting our local whiskey businesses, but we also wanted to see how the two compared in case you live nearby and were curious about which one might be better for you. But first, let’s get into this expression.

This expression has a mashbill of 61% corn, 30% malted wheat, and 9% malted barley. It’s aged at least four years and then finished in a whiskey barrel that was used to age maple syrup.

Nose: oak, maple syrup, and vanilla

Palate: vanilla, custard, and baking spices

Finish: Lightly sweet and warming

ABV: 46.5% | Cost: $48

Compared side by side, my husband thought they tasted pretty similar, but I found the maple barrel finish sweeter than the honey barrel. That said, the sweetness wasn’t overpowering; you simply get a little more of it.

I think the wheated bourbon worked well with the maple barrel. I also picked up more baking spices in this one, which wasn’t something I noticed with the honey barrel finish.

All that to say, to me, they taste different, and I really like both. As someone who doesn’t like anything overly sweet, this had the perfect balance of sweetness with vanilla, custard, and those baking spices.

If you’re looking for a bourbon with a little more sweetness, I’d go with the Maple Syrup Barrel. If you prefer something less sweet, I’d go with the Honey Barrel. Truthfully, I’m excited to have both on our shelf because I already know they’re going to be great in cocktails.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
