Mad River Distillers Burnt Rock Bourbon

Let’s talk about the last sample bottle I have from Mad River Distillers, and that is Burnt Rock Bourbon. Now, I’ll share once again that the samples were provided at no cost, with absolutely no obligation to post, review, or share my thoughts. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

This expression is named after a popular hiking trail in the Mad River Valley. It is aged for at least 2 years, and it was their head distiller, Alex Hilton, who came up with the idea of smoking barley over maple wood from their farm for this whiskey. The mash bill consists of 70% corn, 15% rye, and 15% smoked barley.

Nose: vanilla, smoked bacon, and dried fruit

Palate: rye spices, fruit, vanilla, light sweetness and smoke

Finish: oak, chocolate and spices

ABV: 46% | Cost: $57.99

I saw mixed reviews about this expression, and I think some of that stems from the fact that this is a young whiskey. In most cases, that can mean the whiskey is going to be a bit rough around the edges. Not going to lie, this whiskey is a little bit rough around the edges, but what is absolutely unique about it is that smoked barley.

So, come with me on this journey. When you first sip this, that youthfulness hits you right away, and you’re like, oh. But then you’re hit with the spice, followed by fruit and vanilla. Then comes a little sweetness and smoke, ending with notes of chocolate and spice. It goes from youthfulness, to bold, to what did I just taste?, to I need to sip that again.

This is not going to be for everyone, but I loved how unique it was and the roller coaster of notes it took me on. I like it, and I think with more time to mature, this whiskey is only going to get better.

If you’re looking for something different, this is definitely different and pretty good, in my opinion. So, if you can find it and sample it, I highly recommend you do.
