UPDATE: Sazerac Rye 100 Proof Straight Rye Whiskey

Back in May, we picked up this bottle of Sazerac Rye 100 Proof Straight Rye Whiskey. This was my first time trying the 50% ABV version, as we had always purchased their original 45% ABV expression.

Now that we’ve come to the end of the bottle, I wanted to come back and share our final thoughts and whether we would repurchase it again. But first, let’s revisit the notes.

Nose: cloves, anise, and orange peel

Palate: light sweetness, caramel, apricots, black pepper, and cinnamon

Finish: pepper, oak, and citrus

ABV: 50% | Cost: $39.99 (1 liter)

I predominantly use Sazerac Rye in hot toddies and honestly, this is probably my most repurchased whiskey, and it’s because of hot toddies. In my opinion, Sazerac makes the best whiskey for a hot toddy!

With this expression, I found that it was the hot water from the toddy that brought out more of those cinnamon notes. As I noted in my initial post, there is a difference between this expression and the 45%, with this one leaning more heavily into the pepper.

And while I really enjoyed this bottle, at the end of the day, I still have to give the edge to the 45% ABV. For me, that expression brings out more of the cinnamon notes that I love. Would I repurchase the 50%? Absolutely, especially if I couldn’t find the 45%. But truthfully, we will always have a bottle of Sazerac on our shelves. For the price and versatility, it’s hard to beat.
