I’m a sucker for eye-catching bottles, and the bottle for Howler Head Bourbon is exactly that. Although the 750ml bottle is quite affordable, I was happy to see they had a 50ml available because I wasn’t exactly sure I’d enjoy a banana-flavored bourbon, regardless of the price.
This Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is aged in American oak barrels and infused with natural banana flavor. Let me tell you, I love all things banana, so between the eye-catching bottle and the promise of banana flavor, this bourbon already had my attention. But good packaging and a unique flavor profile can only get you so far. But is it any good? Let’s find out.
Nose: banana, caramel, and oak
Palate: banana forward, with layers of butterscotch, sweetness and spices
Finish: slight burn and sweetness with lingering banana notes
ABV: 40% | Cost: $1.99 50ml (what I purchased); $22.99 750ml
I have to admit; I was very surprised by this one. As much as I love bananas, I went into this fully expecting not to like it, but that wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t just tolerate it, I enjoyed it.
Make no mistake, this is a banana-forward bourbon, so if you’re not a fan of banana flavor, this probably isn’t going to be for you. In fact, while I liked it, my husband did not, which just goes to show that this won’t appeal to everyone.
What I really appreciated was how natural the banana flavor tasted. At no point did it come across as artificial or candy-like. Every time I thought it was about to become overly sweet, it stopped just short of crossing that line. The spice notes and classic bourbon warmth kept everything balanced and prevented it from becoming one-dimensional.
For me, this would be fantastic in a cocktail. If you’re a fan of flavored whiskies, I think this is worth trying because the balance and flavoring are very well done. I honestly enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.
Cheers!
