Craigellachie is a distillery I don’t believe I’ve featured on the blog before, so it’s about time I changed that. Located in the heart of Speyside, between the whisky towns of Rothes and Dufftown in Banffshire. Its name is Gaelic and roughly translates to “rocky hill.”
What helps Craigellachie stand apart from many distilleries? They still rely on old-fashioned worm tubs to cool and condense its spirit. These large tanks contain coiled copper pipes that gradually cool the vapor coming from the stills, turning it back into liquid. Although this process is expensive to maintain, Craigellachie continues to use worm tubs because of the impact it has on flavor. The result is a whisky that is fuller and meatier in character. Now, let’s dive into this expression.
Nose: toasted marshmallows, pineapple, and hints of smoke
Palate: light, vanilla, and pepper
Finish: light sweetness and fruity
ABV: 46% | Cost: $60-$70
This is one of those whiskies that’s incredibly easy to like. It’s light, approachable, and packed with fruity, vanilla-led sweetness alongside a gentle touch of spice. The nose had me expecting something quite different, though. I picked up toasted marshmallows, smoke, and pineapple, giving me serious bonfire-night vibes. Once I took a sip, however, the palate headed in a completely different direction.
The flavor is much softer and more delicate than the nose suggests, which makes for a very easy-drinking dram. I think this would be a great whisky for beginners, but equally enjoyable for seasoned whisky drinkers looking for something uncomplicated and well made. I absolutely loved it, and considering the price, it’s hard to find much fault with it. Great whisky, great value—a win-win in my book.
