If you’re a whiskey lover like I am, it’s hard to beat a good Old Fashioned, especially when it’s as simple as pouring it over ice. But can a bottled version capture that same experience? Today, we’re taking a look at Hochstadter’s Slow & Low Rye Old Fashioned, a ready-to-pour cocktail from The Cooper Spirits Company. Founded by the late Robert J. Cooper. So, let’s pour a glass and dive in.
The cocktail is crafted with straight rye whiskey, rock candy, raw honey, Angostura bitters, and orange peel. It comes in at a 42% ABV, and I picked up a 750ml bottle for $18.99.
This cocktail ended up being much better than I expected, largely because of its spice profile. As someone who enjoys spice-forward whiskeys, that was a big win for me. The sip opens with a touch of sweetness before transitioning into rich rye spice, followed by bright citrus notes that keep everything balanced. The finish carries lingering flavors of oak, orange peel, and a touch more sweetness.
Thanks to the prominent rye spice, this doesn’t drink like a traditional Old Fashioned, but that’s exactly what I enjoyed about it. That said, Old Fashioned purists or those who prefer a softer, less spice-driven cocktail may find it a bit outside of what they’re looking for. For me, the uniqueness worked because the flavors were exceptionally well balanced. If you’re looking for something with a little more spice and character than your typical Old Fashioned, this bottle is definitely worth trying.
Cheers!
