Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon Whiskey

I’ve always been a big fan of Wild Turkey Rare Breed. In fact, until this weekend, it was the only Wild Turkey bourbon I’d ever tasted. After finally getting my hands on a mini bottle of Wild Turkey 101, I was eager to see how it stacked up. Here are my thoughts.

Nose: vanilla, cinnamon and oak

Palate: vanilla, rye grain, spices and oak

Finish: oak and spices

ABV: 50.5% | Cost: $3.99 (for a 50mL, what we got) $23.99 (750ml)

Although it’s very affordable, I wouldn’t call Wild Turkey 101 a beginner-friendly whiskey. It’s bold, spice-forward, and packs a punch. To my palate, the rye influence comes through strongly, so if you’re not a fan of rye-heavy bourbons, this probably won’t be your thing either.

As much as I love Rare Breed, Wild Turkey 101 doesn’t stand on its own for me in the same way. Where I do think it shines is in cocktails. Its bold profile would hold up well in mixed drinks, and at this price point, it’s an easy bottle to justify using behind the bar.

Could I see myself picking up a bottle for cocktails in the future? Absolutely. But as a daily sipper, it just doesn’t quite hit the mark for me. In fact, I’m pretty happy I opted for the 50ml bottle before committing to a full-sized one.

Cheers!
