Not too long ago I realized that although I’ve written about WhistlePig before I had not written about nor had tasted their 6 year PiggyBack. Not wanting to buy a full bottle, I was happy to find a 50ml bottle for just $5.99.
Let me clarify, the actual 750ml PiggyBack is not expensive at a cost of $43.99… But why pay full price for a whole bottle when you don’t know if you are going to like it. Best way to sample is to always look for a smaller size at a fraction of the cost.
This whiskey is 100% rye and is bottled at an abv of 48.28%.
Nose: cinnamon, pepper and citrus
Palate: rye, vanilla, cinnamon and leather
Finish: smooth, spices and vanilla
The taste is signature WhistlePig. The rye is very present with notes of spices, vanilla, and leather. It is smooth with very little bite. Personally, I would mainly use this whiskey in cocktails, not because it’s bad, its a good rye. I just wouldn’t necessarily run out to buy a full bottle only because we own a bottle of the WhistlePig 15 and are happy enough to continue enjoying that one.
If you love rye and are looking for an affordable option, this is a great option. It won’t disappoint and will make a mean cocktail.
Cheers!
