Elijah Craig’s newest Barrel Proof release is here and it’s different from previous years with a lower proof. Past releases have ranged between 128.0 to 140.2 proof. This batch, A121 has a proof of 123.6 or an ABV of 61.8%. Still very strong by all accounts but for those who look forward to the extremely high proof being released every year some were put off by the lower proof.
It’s a 12 year bourbon and the letter “A” indicates the order it was released that year. The first number the month it was released and the last two numbers indicate the year.
Let me be clear, at this proof, you are going to get a few chest hairs… I feel mine growing now since I’m currently sipping this delicious bourbon as I write.
Nose: fruit, caramel and oak
Palate: caramel, cinnamon, vanilla and pepper
Finish: oak, vanilla and layers of goodness
Cost: $74.99
Even though this is a lower proof, this whiskey is not for the faint of heart. The high proof is still present and I will say, the strength of the proof hits you right at the start. It then mellows into a smooth flavorful dram with loads of caramel, vanilla and the ever so slight appearance of pepper. It completely warms you up.
In researching, I read that others preferred past batches when compared with this one. I can’t compare this to any other as this is the first batch I’ve tried. Personally I really enjoyed it. I think the proof is perfect where it’s at. It’s definitely enjoyable and I’m glad we purchased it.
Cheers
