Mad River Distillers: Double Tapped Maple Bourbon Whiskey

And just like that, it’s already September. That means my favorite time of year is just around the corner, and cooler temperatures always signal whiskey drinking season. A week ago, I wrote about Mad River Distillers’ Revolution Rye, a sample that was sent to me by The Whiskey Bard. Today, I want to talk about another sample they provided: Double Tapped Maple Bourbon Whiskey, which feels perfectly suited for this time of year.

This expression combines Mad River’s Straight Bourbon Whiskey with Vermont maple syrup. Let’s get into it.

Nose: maple syrup, oak, and campfire smoke

Palate: vanilla, maple syrup, baking spices, and caramel

Finish: light smoke and sweetness

ABV: 38% | Cost: $47.99

The biggest reason I enjoy this expression is its versatility. As someone who loves a good Hot Toddy and Old Fashioned, I think this whiskey would work beautifully in both. I’ve seen some reviews saying it’s too sweet, but honestly, as someone who typically avoids overly sweet cocktails and spirits, I didn’t find that to be the case at all. I thought it was very well balanced.

The maple was the first thing that hit my palate, but the sweetness didn’t stick around for long. Instead, it mellowed into notes of vanilla, baking spices, and a warm finish that kept everything in check. The maple presence is there, but it never felt overpowering.

I’ll admit, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. While I think it’s enjoyable year-round, I can already tell I’ll appreciate it even more during the colder months, especially in a Hot Toddy. Once again, I’m impressed with what Mad River has done here.

That said, every palate is different. While I didn’t find it overly sweet, others may feel differently. If you’re particularly sensitive to sweeter pours, I’d recommend trying a sample first. But if you’re looking for a whiskey that can add a little seasonal warmth to your Hot Toddies and other cocktails, this one fits the bill perfectly.
