Penelope has dropped another ready-to-pour cocktail, and with this heat wave, and my ongoing mission to try as many ready-made cocktails as possible, you know I had to give it a shot. Let’s crack it open and see if it’s worth adding to your cart.
This Old Fashioned is made with a blend of straight bourbon and rye whiskey, orange bitters, and blackberry simple syrup. We picked up a 750ml bottle for $25.99, which pours about 12 cocktails. That breaks down to roughly $2.15 per drink, not bad at all, especially when you compare it to what you’d pay for an Old Fashioned at a bar.
Nose: citrus and fruit
Palate: sweetness, vanilla, bitters, citrus and rye
Finish: light spices, sweetness and oak
ABV: 38%
I tried this both neat and over ice, and in both cases the first thing that hit me was the sweetness. The good news? It faded quickly, which I was happy about. After that, I picked up notes of vanilla, citrus, and plenty of rye whiskey. The rye really brought the spice and oak forward on my palate. As for the blackberry? Honestly, I didn’t get much of it. That could just be because the rye notes came through so strongly for me.
So, do I like it? Absolutely. That said, I expected a bit more blackberry to come through. Instead, my palate picked up more spice, vanilla, oak, and bitters. Of the three Penelope ready-to-pour cocktails I’ve tried so far (check out my reviews of the other two here or via the link in my bio), Apple Cinnamon remains my favorite, followed by Black Walnut, then Blackberry Old Fashioned.
Overall, I think Penelope is doing a really nice job in the ready-to-pour space. This is a solid addition to the lineup and one I genuinely enjoyed. If you’re looking for an easy Old Fashioned that you can simply pour over ice and enjoy, this is worth checking out.
Cheers!
