Putnam American Single Malt and Tall Ships Gin

In honor of America’s 250th birthday, Boston Harbor Distillery released two limited-edition expressions: an 18-month-aged gin matured in ex-bourbon barrels, which previously held local honey, and a 5+ year American Single Malt aged in new American oak before being finished in rum barrels.

While we’re mainly here for the whiskey, you know I’m still going to talk about the gin too. I had the chance to try both during a recent visit to the distillery this past weekend, so let’s get into it.

Tall Ships Gin | 57% ABV | On the nose, honey jumps out immediately, backed by a nice mix of herbal notes. The palate brings more honey up front, followed by herbs, black pepper, and a touch of citrus. I thought this was beautifully done. I’m not typically a gin drinker, but I genuinely enjoyed this one. With only 50 bottles produced and a price tag around $24-36, I thought it was great.

Putnam American Single Malt | 50% ABV | The nose offers almonds, chocolate, and a pleasant sweetness. On the palate, I got chocolate, fruit, almonds, and a light underlying sweetness. The finish carried those lightly sweet and fruity notes through nicely. Only 180 bottles were produced, with each bottle priced at $180.

Of all the whiskies Boston Harbor Distillery has released so far, this is easily my favorite. It doesn’t drink like a 50% ABV whiskey, and the balance is fantastic. The sweetness is present without becoming overpowering, while the fruit and chocolate notes really shine. They absolutely knocked this one out of the park, and it’s a fitting way to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.

My only issue is the price. I actually went to the distillery intending to buy a bottle but ultimately left without one. Not because it wasn’t good, it was delicious, but because I couldn’t justify spending $180. For me, the quality is there; the value just isn’t.

That said, if you’re comfortable with the price tag, this is an excellent whiskey and absolutely worth trying. And if you’re more of a gin fan, don’t overlook the Tall Ships Gin. It’s fantastic in its own right.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
