UPDATE: Compass Box Myth & Legends I

Nearly six years after bringing it home, we’ve finally emptied our bottle of Compass Box Myth & Legends I. With the last dram poured, it’s the perfect time to revisit this whisky, reflect on my original impressions, and determine if it still earns a spot on my shelf today. But before we do, let’s take another look at the tasting notes and learn a bit more about the expression.

This expression is composed of three Balblair whiskies,15-, 16-, and 22-year-old malts. The younger components were matured in recharred American oak casks, while the oldest spent 22 years in first-fill bourbon barrels.

Nose: vanilla, apples

Palate: chocolate, vanilla, citrus, malt and spices

Finish: fruit with lingering notes of vanilla

ABV: 46% | Cost: $150 (what we paid at the time)

One of the things I loved most about this expression was how light and crisp it was. Alongside the bright citrus notes, there was just enough spice, vanilla, and orchard fruit to create a wonderfully balanced sip. Interestingly, those impressions never changed throughout the nearly six years this bottle sat on our shelf. Revisiting it now, I feel the same way I did when I first opened it, it’s a very good whisky.

Now for the big question: would we buy it again? The honest answer is that we may not even have the opportunity. This was released as a limited edition, and I’m not sure how readily available it is today. That said, even if it were easy to find, our answer would probably still be no.

The reason comes down to value. As enjoyable as this whisky is, I don’t think it quite justifies its price tag. There are plenty of excellent whiskies available at a lower cost that offer a similar experience. While I thoroughly enjoyed every pour from this bottle, it isn’t one I’d be rushing out to replace.

Cheers!
