Bruichladdich 14-Year Yellow Submarine Reclassified

Even if sports aren’t usually your thing, it’s hard to miss that the World Cup is in full swing and Scotland just played its first match right here in Boston. What you might not know is that Bruichladdich is also marking a major milestone: its 25th anniversary. To celebrate, the distillery has re-released its iconic Yellow Submarine as a limited edition. So, let’s dive in because if you’re in town for the matches, I’ll tell you exactly where to find it in Boston.

This latest version follows the 2005 (14-year) and 2018 (25-year) editions, with the new release once again aged 14 years. As someone who loves this brand, although I didn’t try the other iterations, I’m especially excited about this one.

The story behind Yellow Submarine goes back roughly two decades, when Islay fishermen John Baker and Harold Hastie spotted a remote-controlled submarine just off the distillery’s coastline. The device was recovered and held safely at Bruichladdich until the Ministry of Defense reclaimed it, at which point the distillery commemorated the moment by gifting a bottle of the aptly named Yellow Submarine whisky.

Nose: oats, pistachio, spices, and sweetness

Palate: citrus, honey, orange zest, orchard fruit and smokey peat

Finish: light sweetness with notes of praline, spices, and smoke

ABV: 54.2% | Cost: $134.99

If you love peated whisky, you’re going to love this. This isn’t your typical peated whisky. While peat can often dominate and mute other flavors, that’s not the case here. The smoke is present, but it shares the stage beautifully with layers of fruit, spice, citrus, and a subtle sweetness. Everything comes together in a vibrant, harmonious balance. It’s exceptionally well-crafted and I absolutely love this.

Here’s the tricky part, this bottle is not easy to find. I don’t even think it’s available in stores here in MA. I stumbled upon it at the Watchpost Whisky event at The Citizen Boston, where I was told they were one of only two restaurants that got a few bottles. You better believe I ordered a dram. Now I’m just hoping they bring more in. If you’re looking to try it, The Citizen Boston had it when I was there a few days ago, and I’ve heard The Haven in Jamaica Plain might have a couple of bottles too. Definitely worth checking out both spots if you really want to try it.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
