Yesterday I attended a launch party for Watchpost Whiskey at The Citizen in Boston. As many of you know, Citizen has been one of our go-to spots for trying new whiskey since it opened back in 2010 so, if you’re a whiskey lover in Boston and haven’t been yet, it’s worth a visit.
Watchpost is a new blended whiskey from Washington’s own Westland Distillery. It is inspired by the wild spirit of the Pacific Northwest and is aged for 8-years. This blend is composed of their Westland Five-Malt Mashbill: Aged in New Oak and PX Casks with MGP Grain/light Whiskey aged in ex-bourbon barrels. It is also my understanding that this whiskey has a high level of corn in it.
Nose: apricots, biscuits and chocolate
Palate: vanilla, lemon, grain and hints of chocolate
Finish: woody, vanilla and hints of citrus
ABV: 42.5% | Cost: $35-$40
I really enjoyed this both neat and in cocktails, but I’ll start with it on its own. It’s a lighter whiskey, which makes it especially appealing this time of year. It is easy, approachable, and very sip friendly. On the palate, you get notes of lemon and vanilla up front, with subtle hints of chocolate rounding things out on the finish.
Another standout for me is the price point. It makes this an even more attractive option, especially for cocktails, where you still get great character without feeling like you’re overpouring.
In cocktails, I tried it both in an Old Fashioned and in a drink called the Ginger Watch. Both were great, but the Old Fashioned was the standout for me. The lemon and vanilla notes in the whiskey really elevate the drink, adding a bright, balanced twist to the classic. It was so good I ended up ordering a second.
I appreciate Westland stepping into a new category with this release. Overall, at this price point, this is a fantastic option. If you’re looking to try something a little different, this is worth checking out. And if you’re in Boston and want to sample it, head to The Citizen.
Cheers
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
