Sazerac Rye 100 Proof Straight Rye Whiskey

About three weeks ago, I posted about polishing off our bottle of Sazerac Rye (you can find that review here on this platform). Naturally, that meant it was time to pick up a replacement. My original plan was to grab the standard bottling, but when I spotted the 100 Proof version, curiosity got the better of me, I wanted to see how the two compared.

If you’re wondering what separates them, the difference is simple: proof. The original comes in at 45% ABV, while this one steps it up to 50% ABV. With that out of the way, let’s get into it.

Nose: cloves, anise, and orange peel

Palate: light sweetness, caramel, apricots, black pepper, and cinnamon

Finish: pepper, oak, and citrus

ABV: 50% | Cost: $39.99 (1 liter)

Yes, there is a difference, and it goes beyond the proof. This version leans more heavily into pepper rather than cinnamon, making it bolder and a bit more intense overall. I also pick up more citrus notes here. When enjoyed neat, the pepper takes the lead, supported by layers of cinnamon, citrus, and caramel.

My biggest question, though, was how it would perform in my beloved hot toddy. What I loved about the 45% ABV version was how the heat really coaxed out those cinnamon notes. So, naturally, I had my hot toddy maker (aka my husband) put one together for me. I’m happy to report that the hot water still brings out the cinnamon in this whiskey, just not as sharply. Instead, it comes through in a creamier, more subdued way. It’s a calmer cinnamon that doesn’t overpower the drink but plays nicely with everything else.

Personally, I’m really glad this version exists. It’s going to be fantastic in cocktails, and if you enjoy making drinks at home, this is an easy must-have. The versatility of this rye is impressive, especially coming from someone who doesn’t love every rye out there. This one, though, is a staple. And at this price point? It’s hard to argue against it.

Cheers!
