It’s no secret that I’m a fan of this brand and what they’ve been building. Up until now, the 10-year has been my favorite expression. Recently, though, I had the chance to taste their American Pot Still, their first fully self-distilled whiskey. Let’s see how this one, stacks up.
This expression is triple pot distilled from a 100% Midwestern mash bill of malted and unmalted barley and then aged in virgin American oak.
Nose: oak, spices, and light sweetness
Palate: caramel, vanilla, spices, pepper, and malt
Finish: oak and warming spices
ABV: 46%
Cost: $50
Does this expression outperform my go-to, the 10-year? No, but it remains an impressive dram in its own right. There’s a nice level of uniqueness and complexity here.I’m a fan of the triple pot distillation, as it softens some of the rougher edges you’d normally expect from an American whiskey. It’s undeniably peppery and warming, yet well balanced with layers of caramel, vanilla, and spice. Well worth exploring at its price point.
Cheers!
