I enjoy a good daily sipper as much as anyone, but what I love even more are those special whiskies reserved for meaningful moments—occasions you want not only to remember, but to honor with something truly exceptional. The Laphroaig 33-Year-Old Strong Characters: Donald Johnston just might be one of those whiskies.
A few years ago, Laphroaig introduced the Strong Characters series to celebrate those who helped shape the brand. Volume One tells the story of Donald Johnston, the elder of the two brothers who founded Laphroaig in 1815. Adding to its sense of occasion, the bottle itself is brought to life through illustrations by award‑winning British artist Bill Bragg, making this release as visually striking as it is historically significant.
Before diving into the tasting notes, it’s worth mentioning that this was a limited release. That said, should you happen to come across a bottle, I wanted to share my thoughts. The whisky was matured in a combination of American oak ex‑bourbon casks and European oak sherry‑seasoned hogsheads, a pairing that sets the stage for both depth and balance. But the real question remains: is what’s inside the bottle worthy of the moment? Keep reading to find out.
Nose: coastal salt, honey and smoke
Palate: dark fruit, baking spices, vanilla, caramelized sugar and peat
Finish: smoke, light sweetness and oak
ABV: 43.8% | Cost: $800-$1000+ (depending on availability and retailer)
Wow, simply wow. This certainly won’t be for everyone, but for an Islay Scotch lover, it’s nothing short of phenomenal. Think peat smoke meeting fruit and cake in the best possible way. It’s undeniably smoky, yet balanced by a gentle sweetness, with the fruit influence from the hogsheads rounding everything out beautifully.
The peat is present, but it never becomes overpowering or aggressive. Instead, there’s a surprising mellowness to each sip that elevates the experience and keeps you coming back. It’s refined, composed, and exceptionally drinkable for a whisky of this age and character. I’m genuinely blown away. If you ever find yourself somewhere that offers a sample, don’t hesitate, try it. This is whisky on another level. Would I personally purchase a bottle at this price? Probably not. But if money were no object, it would be tempting, if only because this is a dram I’ll be dreaming about for a long time.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
