Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey

When I tell you that we drank a lot of whiskey when we went to VA, well, I meant it. This was another whiskey we had the chance to try with friends. And, unlike the other whiskies this rye whiskey was not always produced in Kentucky. Pikesville was first produced in Maryland during the 1890s. Like many brands in those times, it fell victim to prohibition and production had to stop. Fast forward to today and the brand is produced in Kentucky by Heaven Hill Distillery.

Nose: oak, light sweetness, and pepper
Palate: rye, spices, cloves, and light sweetness
Finish: vanilla and spices
ABV: 55%
Cost: $40-$50 (msrp)

This whiskey most certainly has a bite to it. That is certainly to be expected given its ABV but, that does last long. Following the strength, you get hit with sweetness and loads of baking spices. It’s certainly one of the better ryes I’ve had recently and that’s saying a lot as rye isn’t my favorite whiskey to drink lately.

Honestly, better than I thought it would be. It’s a great option for those rye whiskey lovers. I personally don’t need another rye in my shelf, but it was pretty darn good.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.

Rye is a style I gravitate to when out whiskey hunting.
The Pikesville I tried was at 80 Proof & while well balanced & flavourful, didn’t quite reach the rye punch I was looking for.
Maybe the version you enjoyed would be more to my tastes?

It might be. I was pleasantly surprised by it as I am not much of a rye person. Personally I liked it. The higher proof might have definitely helped improve the tasting notes.
