Balcones Texas Rye Cask Strength Single Barrel Collection #20166

Fun fact, I lived in Southern Texas for two years. It was a state that contributed to my years of growth after college, so it has a special place in my heart.

Balcones Distilling was established in 2009 and is in Waco, Texas. What helps their aging process? Well, their hot weather off course. Listen, I was born in the Caribbean, but I truly didn’t experience heart till I lived in Texas.

This bottle is a single barrel pick by Total Wine. It’s distilled from a 100% rye mash bill (84% pure Texas rye and 16% specialty rye from Germany). I purchased this bottle at $67.99.

Nose: rye, sweetness, and brown sugar
Palate: smooth (for a cask strength), nutty, spices rye and hints of sweetness
Finish: slight burn and rye sweetness
ABV: 66%

This whiskey has a beautiful dark mahogany color. At 66% you expect this whiskey to punch you in the face but, no uppercut at all. Maybe a slight jab at best. So, don’t expect a fight, it’s smooth, nutty, and spiced with a light burn at the end. Every so often you get a pinch of sweetness from the rye that simply keeps you going back for more.

I like this whiskey, no wait, let me correct myself, I LOVE this whiskey. It’s unexpectedly smooth and full of flavor. Also, this is a cask strength whiskey at just about $68. I mean that’s a bargain if you ask me. If you’re looking for a new rye with some power, look no further this one has both.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
