James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Rye Whiskey

OK, I had never heard of this whiskey till our friends brought it out while we were visiting them in VA. It’s a Kentucky whiskey first established in 1780 but it’s a brand that was relaunched in 2012.

This 100% proof (50% abv) whiskey is 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It is aged 3-4 years and although it is bottled in Kentucky, it is distilled in Indiana.

Nose: pepper and spices
Palate: cloves, spices, cinnamon and vanilla
Finish: lightly sweet and spiced

I wasn’t expecting much from this whiskey, but it surprised me not only in taste but in price. This rye whiskey costs about $25. For a rye whiskey that price is darn exceptional. I’m certain we’ve all paid more than $25 for a lesser whiskey. This whiskey… it’s good. It’s full of flavor, it’s smooth and balanced. It’s a rye whiskey that doesn’t smack you in the face with rye notes.

If you have a rye lover in your life this, be a great gift. They get a good whiskey; you don’t break the bank and they think you’re a person that has great taste. It’s a win win.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
