Earlier this month, I shared my thoughts on Wenzel Distillery’s Toasted Barrel Proof. Today, I’m talking about my favorite of the three samples they gifted me: their Wheated Barrel Proof.
As always, although these products were gifted, there was absolutely no obligation to post, review, or share my thoughts. All opinions are entirely my own.
Now, let’s get into the whiskey.
This expression is aged at least 8 years, with a mashbill of 65% corn, 12.5% wheat, 12.5% oats, and 10% barley.
Nose: vanilla, oak, and caramel
Palate: cinnamon, pepper, caramel, and almonds
Finish: light sweetness, vanilla, and baking spices
ABV: 55.35% Cost: $99
Of the three, this was the sweeter expression, but it was also my favorite of the bunch. The combination of oats and wheat in the mashbill makes it a little untraditional and gives this whiskey something quite unique.
What you end up with is a really well-balanced, lightly sweet whiskey. The sweetness never becomes too much, thanks to the baking spices, cinnamon, and pepper that balance everything out.
For me, this was an absolute standout. If you’re a fan of wheated whiskey but are looking for something slightly different, I think you’ll really enjoy this one. It’s unique, not overly sweet, and easily one I would purchase at full price to have on our shelf.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
