Bully Boy Bourbon Whiskey Finished in a Honey Barrel

The last time we visited Bully Boy Distillery was way back in 2013, but this past weekend we finally made our way back after seeing they were releasing a new Bourbon Whiskey Finished in a Honey Barrel.

The upside? They were offering free samples, and you know one thing I love is being able to try before I buy. Honestly, they had me at free sample and honey, so naturally, I dragged my husband along for the tasting. Note: Sadly, this is a distillery-only release. It seems you can only get it there, and it’s also a limited run.

Before we get into the whiskey, I have to mention how impressed I was by all the changes they’ve made to the distillery since our last visit. Their bar is beautiful, they have a great cocktail menu, and the place was jam-packed with people, which we were very happy to see. Now, let’s get into the whiskey.

This whiskey is a blend of their American Straight Whiskey and Wheated Whiskey, both aged for at least five years in new American oak. The blend is then finished in a barrel previously used by Pete’s Backyard Beehives in Rowley, MA, to age honey.

Nose: floral, light sweetness, vanilla, and oak

Palate: honey, spices, vanilla, and oak

Finish: light sweetness, warming and lingering spices

ABV: 47.5% Cost: $45

I don’t like anything overly sweet, so I’m happy to report that the sweetness in this whiskey was just right. Honey was the first note to hit my palate, but it didn’t linger. It quickly gave way to those classic whiskey spice notes, along with vanilla and oak. At the tail end, the honey popped back in for just a second before giving way to warmth and lingering spice.

This whiskey would be amazing in cocktails! And if you’re wondering whether I liked it, well…I went for the free sample and came home with a bottle. So yes, I loved it. Not only did we buy the whiskey, but we also picked up some honey from Pete’s Backyard Beehives because we’re quickly approaching hot toddy season, and I already know this whiskey and that honey are going to be amazing together.

I think Bully Boy did a fantastic job with this whiskey, and I’m very happy we brought a bottle home. It will be put to good use! If you happen to live in the area, I suggest stopping by the distillery and seeing if you can grab a sample, and maybe a bottle, while they’re still available.
