And just like that, we’re already in August! Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been reviewing classic American bourbons that deliver fantastic flavor without breaking the bank. One thing I’ve learned is that some of the most enjoyable pours are the ones that don’t require a big investment. Today, I’m switching things up with an Irish whiskey I don’t talk about often, but one that offers a classic, affordable pour.

Bushmills is one of Ireland’s most iconic whiskey brands, first licensed to distill in 1608. Their Original blend is made with 45% Irish single malt whiskey and 55% grain whiskey. A couple of years ago, I had the chance to sample the Bushmills 25- and 30-Year expressions, and they were outstanding. This past weekend, I finally tried their Original Signature Blend and wanted to share my thoughts. But first, let’s look at the tasting notes.

Nose: light sweetness, and spices

Palate: Honey, vanilla, warming spices, and a touch of sweetness

Right out of the gate, you’re greeted with a pleasant warmth followed by notes of honey and vanilla, before the spices begin to emerge. The whiskey is silky, well-balanced, and simply enjoyable to sip. For the price, it’s hard to beat. It’s easy-drinking and warming without being overly harsh on the finish.

I know there are countless whiskey brands out there, and many come with a hefty price tag. One thing I always like to highlight is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy a good dram. Bushmills Original is affordable, approachable, and versatile enough to enjoy neat or in your favorite cocktail. To me, that’s a win. And if you’re not ready to commit to a full bottle, the 50ml mini is a great way to give it a try.
