Laphroaig Elements 3.0 Small Batch Whisky

I’m a long‑time fan of Laphroaig, and their latest release happens to be the third entry in the Elements series: Laphroaig Elements 3.0 Small Batch Whisky. This edition highlights an experiment in their kilning process, where peat was burned hotter and for a longer duration than usual.

I should note up front that I haven’t tried Elements 1.0 or 2.0, which—based on what I’ve read—focused on variations in fermentation and mashing. Because of that, I won’t be able to compare this release to its predecessors, but I can dive into how Elements 3.0 stands on its own.

Nose: Peat smoke, sea salt, and charcoal

Palate: Bitter chocolate, dark fruit, charred wood, roasted coffee, and a touch of sweetness

Finish: Long and savory, fading into salty, ashy tones

Cost: $165

ABV: 55.3%

If you’re wondering how this compares to the classic 10‑year expression, the biggest difference is intensity—especially in the peat. With the peat burned hotter and for a longer duration, that extended, high‑temperature kilning makes a noticeable impact on the character of this whisky. You’ll find bitter dark chocolate, deep, almost brooding fruit notes, and roasted coffee, all wrapped in a strongly charred profile. There are brief hints of sweetness throughout, but it never becomes a sweet whisky by any stretch. This is bold, smoky, and unapologetically heavy.

If you plan to try it, you need to genuinely love peat smoke—it’s going to come at you from every direction. If peat isn’t your thing, this isn’t the whisky that will convert you. I’ve been a Scotch lover for more than two decades. My first whisky obsession was peated whisky, and to this day they remain my favorite—something I don’t see changing anytime soon. So, did I enjoy this release? Absolutely. No question about that. But here’s the catch: I don’t love the price. Is it a good whisky? Yes. Is it worth it for a peat enthusiast? Not at this cost. I have plenty of other peated bottles on my shelf that deliver just as much enjoyment without the high price tag.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
