Buchanan’s Deluxe 12-Year Blended Scotch Whisky

I’ve strolled past this expression at the liquor store countless times without giving it a chance. But when I noticed it in a mini last month, I figured it was the perfect opportunity to finally try it—especially since I’m a fan of their Pineapple expression. Time to find out whether skipping it all this time was a mistake or a smart move.

James Buchanan launched his whisky brand in 1884 and designed the original bottle to resemble a water canteen—a nod to the selfless act of soldiers sharing water during times of conflict. Let’s begin.

Nose: citrus, caramel and honey

Palate: chocolate, caramel, lightly sweet with notes of citrus and subtle notes of smoke

Finish: spices, caramel and hints of smoke

ABV: 40%

Cost: $2.49 (What we paid for a 50ml; 750ml $33)

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the smoke notes—something I know can turn people away. Yes, they’re present, but they blend beautifully in this dram. In fact, they’re so subtle and well‑integrated that even those who shy away from smoke are likely to appreciate how elegantly it’s woven in.

This expression truly impressed me, leaving me wondering why it took me so long to try it. It’s light, approachable, and effortless to sip. Coupled with its accessible price, it makes for both an excellent everyday pour and a great cocktail component.

Given its quality, affordability, and versatility, this is absolutely one we’d be happy to add to our shelves.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.

One reason these long lived blends continue to survive is that they consistently produce easy drinking whisky with just enough character to keep customers coming back.
Too strong flavours often scare some away – so finding the right balance is the key.
Buchanan’s have clearly managed that here.

I fully agree with you. That’s exactly the reason it has continued to stand the test of time. Cheers!
