Jimmy Red Classic Straight Bourbon Whiskey

So, a couple of days ago I tried a whiskey I’d never had before. Honestly, I was thinking, ‘Yeah, this probably isn’t going to be my thing.’ But let’s not jump to conclusions yet—I’ll save my verdict for later. First, let’s talk about the brand behind the bottle.

This whiskey comes from High Wire Distilling Co. in Charleston, South Carolina, founded by Scott Blackwell and Ann Marshall. What makes it stand out? It’s made with 100% corn—but not just any corn. It’s crafted from a striking magenta-hued red corn, a nearly forgotten heirloom variety that was rescued and preserved through collaboration with dedicated researchers and farmers.

Nose: corn, vanilla and oak

Palate: cinnamon, vanilla, and light sweetness

Finish: touches of corn, maple and vanilla

ABV: 47.5%

Cost: $60 (based on their website)

I went into this tasting convinced I wouldn’t like this bourbon. And yet—it completely surprised me. The flavor opens with a soft corn sweetness, layered with warm notes of cinnamon, creamy vanilla, and subtle touches of maple. I’ve sampled countless bourbons, but none have tasted quite like this. It’s distinctive, leaning slightly sweet, but balanced by depth and nuance. At $60, it feels like a steal compared to many higher-priced bottles that fail to impress. I think it’s a fantastic value! For me, this one’s a winner and worth it.

Cheers!
