Uncle Nearest – Nearest Green

As we celebrate Black History Month, I would like to shine a spotlight on a remarkable whiskey distillery that is not only black-owned but also owned by a woman. This brand, owned by Fawn Weaver, pays tribute to the Legacy of Nathan “Nearest” Green, America’s first-known African American master distiller, who played a significant role in teaching Jack Daniel the art of whiskey making.

Nose: oak, cinnamon and honey

Palate: cinnamon, pepper, and vanilla

Finish: warming, cinnamon and pepper

ABV: 42%

Cost: $26 (What we paid)

I was pleasantly surprised by the smoothness of this whiskey. While it does have a slight bite towards the end, it leans more towards a warming sensation rather than a harsh bite. Throughout the sip, I detected prominent notes of cinnamon and pepper. If you are not a fan of these flavors, this whiskey may not be for you. Although I detected hints of honey on the nose, I didn’t experience much sweetness in the sip. With that said, it still went down smoothly.

To this day, my favorite expression from Uncle Nearest remains their 1856 Premium Batch, and that has not changed. Nearest Green is an excellent option for those seeking a more affordable whiskey to enjoy both neat and in a cocktail. In a time where whiskey prices continue to skyrocket, I appreciate the price point where Nearest Green sits. While this whiskey will not blow you away, it offers a similar tasting profile to other higher-priced options you may already have on your shelves, I know I do.

Cheers!
