When I think of rye whiskey, the first thing that comes to mind are American whiskies followed by Canadian whiskies. I had not seen an Irish Rye Whiskey till I saw Kilbeggan’s Small Batch Rye. This limited edition rye contains a mash bill of malt, barley and 30% rye. Kilbeggan is reaching into its roots of when Irish Distillers used rye in their mash back in 1890.
What’s even better? This whiskey is the first whiskey that was 100% distilled and matured at the Kilbeggan Distillery since it’s restoration which was completed in 2010.
Tasting Notes
Nose: pepper, spices, oak and ginger
Palate: creamy, vanilla, spices, and cloves
Finish: spices and vanilla
This is quite simply a delicious whiskey. It is lightly sweet, creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. There is no complexity to it and honestly, that is absolutely fine. What you are getting is quality deliciousness at an affordable price.
I’ve purchased rye whiskies at a heftier price and a good amount of them don’t come close to how good this one is. This is a smooth, easy to drink, won’t burn your throat kind or your wallet of whiskey. If all that sounds appealing… then this is the whiskey for you. I’d definitely recommend trying.
Cheers
