Highland Park Cask Strength Edition No. 2

I am a huge fan of Highland Park, and I’ve had their Cask Strength Edition No. 1 before. When I recently spotted Edition No. 2 in a 50ml bottle, I obviously had to grab it. Edition No. 2 comes in at an even higher 63.9% ABV compared to Edition No. 1 at 63.3%. Let’s see how this version stacks up.

Edition No. 2 was released in 2021 and matured in sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks.

Nose: fruit, salt, and peat smoke

Palate: salt, pepper, vanilla, and light honey notes

Finish: warming, pepper, and oak

ABV: 63.9% | Cost: $90 (we spent about $6 for a 50ml)

This whisky is bold, but surprisingly, I don’t find it quite as bold as Edition No. 1, even though this one comes in at a slightly higher ABV. This edition has a slightly sweeter side, not overly sweet, but just enough that I really enjoyed it. I’m guessing some of that sweetness might be coming from the European sherry casks.

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had a Highland Park expression I didn’t like, and this one was no exception. The salt and pepper notes are beautifully balanced by the vanilla and light honey, giving it a nice mix of savory and sweet without taking away from the strength of the whisky.

Although we only bought the 50ml, I still think $90 is a reasonable price for this whisky, especially given the ABV. If you can find the mini, I think that’s a great way to sample it because this won’t be for everyone. It’s robust, strong, and drinks like it, so if that’s not your thing, this probably won’t be for you. But if you love Highland Park and enjoy a strong dram, I suggest giving this one a try.
