I’ve yet to encounter a disappointing expression from Cotswolds Distillery, and the Hearts & Crafts No. 6 Calvados Single Malt is no exception. Matured in carefully selected Calvados casks, this release is part of the distillery’s Hearts & Crafts series, a tribute to the Arts and Crafts movement that flourished in the Cotswolds in the late 19th century. Let’s dive in.
Nose: apple tart, pear, cinnamon and cloves
Palate: vanilla, toffee, apples, and light sweetness
Finish: cinnamon, nutmeg and orchard fruits
ABV: 55% | Costs: $130 (depending on retailers)
This expression was an absolute delight. I expected it to lean heavily toward sweetness, but the sweetness here is restrained and elegantly balanced with orchard fruits and baking spices. The result is a fruity, highly approachable whisky that’s easy to sip. While I’d happily enjoy it neat, its bright fruit character and gentle sweetness would also shine in a cocktail. Overall, this is very well executed, and if you happen to come across it, it’s well worth a pour.
Cheers!
