Last year, I raved about Penelope Cocktails’ Black Walnut Old Fashioned (seriously, it was a treat). If you missed it, check out my review on Instagram or the blog—link in bio. But now the real question: does today’s contender steal the spotlight? Let’s find out!
This Old Fashioned brings together straight bourbon and rye whiskey, balanced with apple-cinnamon bitters and a touch of simple syrup. We grabbed a 750ml bottle for just $25, and according to the label, that’s enough for 12 cocktails. Do the math—that’s about $2 per drink; an unbeatable value compared to the $16–$20 you’d typically pay at a bar.
Nose: apples and spices
Palate: cinnamon, fruit, spices, and light sweetness
Finish: vanilla and cinnamon
ABV: 40%
In my Black Walnut Old Fashioned review, I mentioned that the flavor profile felt like a roller coaster—unexpected twists and turns. This Apple Cinnamon Old Fashioned, however, is much more balanced and consistent, and honestly, I think I prefer it. From the very first sip, you’re greeted with a bold hit of cinnamon, followed by layers of fruit and warm baking spices, finishing with a touch of light sweetness. I love that the sweetness is subtle—it doesn’t overpower the drink.
Between the two, this one wins for me, mainly because it’s less sweet than the Black Walnut. If you’re a cinnamon fan or someone who enjoys cocktails that aren’t overly sweet, this is your drink. They also offer a Peach Old Fashioned, but I’ve heard it leans very sweet, so I’m hesitant to try. If you’ve had it, let me know your thoughts! For now, I can confidently say this Apple Cinnamon Old Fashioned is delicious and a win for me.
Cheers!
