Barrell Bourbon Cask Finish Series: P.X. Sherry Edition 001

Barrell Craft Spirits (BCS) is a brand we don’t often explore, so sampling this expression during a recent visit with friends was an exciting opportunity. This marks only our second experience with BCS. For those unfamiliar, P.X. refers to Pedro Ximénez—a type of sherry cask renowned for its rich, sweet character. For this release, BCS blended straight bourbon whiskies and finished them in P.X. sherry casks, creating a distinctive profile. Let’s take a closer look at what this whiskey has to offer.

The mash bill is 80% corn, 16% rye, and 4% malted barley. The blend includes bourbons from Kentucky (9 and 10 years), Indiana (6, 7, 8, and 12 years), and Tennessee (7 and 15 years). After blending, it’s aged for 6 years to bring everything together.

Nose: fruit and oak

Palate: vanilla, spices, pepper and oak

Finish: warming, spices, sherry and pepper

ABV: 57.76%

Cost: $85

This whiskey comes in at cask strength, so fair warning—it’s strong! If you’re not into bold pours, this might not be your jam. But here’s the thing: the sherry cask influence really shines through. You’ll pick up notes of sherry, vanilla, warm spices, and a peppery kick that sticks around from start to finish. Honestly, I liked this way more than I expected. For a cask-strength bottle, the price feels reasonable, which is a big win. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for something to keep you cozy on a cold winter day, this will do the trick. Definitely one to sample first.

Cheers!
