I’ve mentioned before that rye isn’t typically my preference. However, while attending a friend’s event recently, we came across this bottle and decided it would make a thoughtful gift. To our surprise, they opened it immediately and shared a toast with us, giving us the chance to sample it. Curious about how it measured up? Stick around to find out!
Distilled in 2017, bottled in 2024. Mash bill: 63% rye, 24% corn, 13% malted barley.
Nose: rye and oak
Palate: vanilla, pepper and caramel
Finish: spiced and oak
ABV: 61.6%
Cost: $88.99 (what we paid)
I’ll be honest—this turned out better than I expected. While I wouldn’t buy it for myself, I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was. The spice and pepper notes were prominent, but what elevated the experience were the subtle hints of sweetness from vanilla and caramel. It started bold and assertive, then mellowed nicely as it opened. If you’re a rye fan, this is worth sampling.
Cheers!
