Tamnavulin Double Cask

This Double Cask marks my second encounter with Tamnavulin. Back in September, I explored their Sherry Cask edition—a delightful introduction to the brand. So how does this one measure up? Let’s dive in.

A quick refresher on Tamnavulin: nestled in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains near the River Livet, this Speyside distillery began its journey in 1966. Production was halted in 1995, but after nearly two decades of silence, the brand made a comeback in 2016. This expression is matured in American oak casks and finished in sherry barrels.

Nose: marzipan, fruit and honey

Palate: fruit, oak and toffee

Finish: lightly sweet

ABV: 40%

Cost: $34.99 (What we paid)

While digging into this expression, I noticed a lot of folks weren’t too fond of it. But here’s a spoiler: we bought a bottle. And we wouldn’t have done that if we didn’t like it. The important thing to remember is that whisky is personal—what doesn’t work for some might be a hit for you. My advice? Always try before you buy. Everyone’s palate is different, and that’s part of the fun.

I really enjoyed this expression. Compared to the Sherry Cask edition, it feels more refined—more grown-up, if you will. It’s richer, fruitier, and has a pleasantly chewy texture. Is it groundbreaking? Not quite. But with its low ABV, it’s incredibly approachable, and at this price point, it’s hard to argue. I especially appreciate the subtle sweetness, and the standout notes of pineapple. I’m genuinely glad this bottle found a spot on our shelf.

All in all, this Double Cask expression from Tamnavulin is a welcome addition to our collection. It may not break new ground, but it delivers solid character, easy drinkability, and great value. If you’re looking for something approachable with a touch of fruit-forward charm—especially those pineapple notes—it’s worth a try.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
