On this brisk and blustery Columbus Day, I wanted to share a quick update on one of my longtime favorites — Highland Park Cask Strength Edition No. 1. After sitting proudly on our shelf since 2021, we’ve finally finished the bottle. So, the big question: Would we buy it again? Read on to find out.
Before diving into the review, let’s revisit the tasting notes. With one exception, I can’t quite recall what we originally paid for this bottle. These days, it typically retails between $90 and $150.
Nose: vanilla, peat and spices
Palate: fruit, citrus, lightly sweet with spices
Finish: fruit and light peat
ABV: 63.3%
This whisky is bold — not for the faint of heart. Would we buy it again? Not at the current price point. As much as I love Highland Park, I’ve had expressions from them that were more refined and more affordable. Yes, this is a cask strength release — something I’m usually happy to pay a premium for — but if I’m spending this much, I expect a smoother experience than what this bottle delivered.
That said, it’s a whisky that’ll absolutely keep you warm through the depths of winter. Highland Park remains a fantastic brand, and while we enjoyed this edition, we’re not in a hurry to pick up another bottle anytime soon.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend people to try it and make up their own minds.
