Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition

Happy first day of fall! My favorite season has officially arrived, and I’m kicking it off with a Single Malt Scotch that’s new to me—Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition. I recently attended a tasting event at Norfolk Wine and Spirits in Norfolk, MA, where this was one of the featured selections. So… was it any good? Keep on reading.

Nestled in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains, near the River Livet, Tamnavulin is a Speyside distillery with a storied history. It first opened its doors in 1966, but operations were paused in 1995. After nearly a two-decade hiatus, the brand was relaunched in 2016. This expression begins its maturation in American ex-bourbon casks, before being finished in selected seasoned sherry casks sourced from renowned cooperages in Southern Spain.

Nose: vanilla, banana, and ginger

Palate: light bodied, soft sweetness, oranges and vanilla

Finish: light and mellow

ABV: 40%

Cost: $34.99 (what we paid for 750ml)

So, was it any good? Well—good enough that we bought the bottle! What I appreciate about this whisky is how approachable it is. Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition makes for a perfect introduction to whisky, especially for those who might be new to it. With its low ABV, light body, and mellow character (no harsh burn), even non-whisky drinkers can enjoy it.

It could also shine in cocktails—think hot toddies, highballs, and other whisky-based mixes. The subtle sweetness, along with notes of vanilla and orange, adds just the right touch of flavor without overpowering. If you’re expecting something bold or complex, this won’t blow you away. But it’s still a solid, enjoyable dram—and at this price point, it’s an easy win.

Lastly, if you’re in Massachusetts and haven’t yet attended a tasting at Norfolk Wine & Spirits, you’re genuinely missing out. Bikram is fantastic, knowledgeable, welcoming, and passionate about whisky. The shop boasts one of the best whisky selections in the state in my opinion.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
