Filet Bay is the first single malt whisky made in Yorkshire, England. The distillery was founded by two friends who, with barley from their farm, their own water source, and a background in brewing beer, decided to venture into whiskey-making. With the expertise of the legendary Jim Swan, Filet Bay Yorkshire Single Malt Whisky came to life. From this brand, I had the pleasure of sampling both the Flagship and STR Finish whiskies. Let’s dive into the details.
Flagship
Nose: fruit, vanilla and sweetness
Palate: citrus, caramel and vanilla
Finish: light honey and vanilla
ABV: 46%
Cost: $60-$70
STR Finish Batch 2
Nose: red fruits and oak
Palate: vanilla, fruits and spices
Finish: oak and vanilla
ABV: 48%
Cost: $70-$100
These two expressions are quite distinct from each other, yet I enjoyed both. The Flagship is lighter, easy to drink, smooth, with notes of vanilla and a subtle sweetness throughout the dram. On the other hand, the STR Finish Batch 2 offers more spice, red fruit notes, and occasional hints of oak. The Flagship is ideal for daily drinking, while the STR Finish feels more suited for colder days in my opinion. Both are excellent, but you prefer approachable flavors, the Flagship if your best choice. If you seek spicier and more woody notes, then the STR finish is the way to go.
Cheers!
