Isle of Skye Whisky 12 Year

At first glance, you’ll wonder, did a new distillery open on Isle of Skye? Currently, Talisker and Torabhaig are the only two distilleries to inhabit the island. This brand doesn’t trace back to either of them. It’s a brand put out by Ian Macleod distillers, which is one of Scotland’s independent bottlers. So no, not a new distillery but, is it worth trying?

This is a blended whisky that combines peated Island Malts with Speyside and Highland Malts and grain whiskies. It is matured in oak casks and is labeled as limited batch release.

Nose: sweetness, vanilla, and honey
Palate: apricots, fruit, spices and dark chocolate
Finish: smooth, light peat and spices
ABV: 40%
Cost: $26

OK, I thought I was going to hate this, but it’s far better than I thought it would be. Not going to lie, I bought this mainly because of the price. If it was bad, my wallet wouldn’t have suffered as much if it went down the drain. But… this whisky is pretty darn good!

The whisky is easy to drink, lightly sweet and the peat is so subtle, even a non-peat lover could enjoy. It’s smooth with no burn. The light sweetness is the first thing that hits the back of your tongue but that quickly goes away and then you encounter spices and dark chocolate. Honestly the subtle peat doesn’t hit you till the end.

I’m still surprised at how much I like this and what’s even better, you can’t beat this price. It’s better than many other blended whiskies out there at double the price. It’s a huge win for me both in taste and cost. So, if you are looking for something affordable, try this, you won’t be disappointed.

Cheers!

I didn’t think I’d like it either- never have been a big fan of heavily peated Scotch. But this is different. Instead of overloading on the peat to the point of burying everything else, it does what peat does well- enhances and brings every taste note together in a gentle, smooth explosion of flavor in your mouth. And it does it continuously, from first sip to last.

At 74, after being a blended Scotch drinker for over 50 years, I’ve found my new favorite: Isle of Skye

I completely agree! The peat is there but it perfectly plays very well with all the other notes. Glad you found a new favorite. Cheers 🥃
