Dark Arts Whiskey House is a brand I was recently introduced to. They take sourced whiskey, blend it, rebarrel it and finish it in Lexington, Kentucky. To them, whiskey blending isn’t just science but rather a form of art. Dark Arts’ goal is to take that art to a whole new level.
I had the opportunity to sample most of their offerings but today I want to talk about my favorite, the Amburana Oak Stave Finished, Small Batch Rye. Amburana is a Brazilian Oak. The whiskey is 7-years old. For this whiskey they take 6-year rye, and they add toasted Amburana Oak Staves to finish it off. The blend is 95% rye and 5% malt barley.
Nose: oak, rye, apples and ginger
Palate: cinnamon, vanilla, French toast, spices and sweetness
Finish: cinnamon, coconut and a warming burn
Cost: $99 (what we paid)
ABV: 54%
A single sip of this whiskey transported me back to my childhood kitchen, sitting at the table, enjoying a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I’m not kidding you! This is by far the best cinnamon tasting whiskey I’ve ever had. I say that because other whiskies with cinnamon notes in them are fleeting at best. Not on this one! It’s the most prominent note and it’s with you throughout the entire sip. It is simply fantastic! We loved it so much we immediately went and bought a bottle. We happily paid the $99 because it is that good.
I’m thoroughly impressed with this brand and what they’ve achieved with this offering. I cannot recommend Dark Arts Amburana enough. It’s sweet, spiced and very warming. It’s like the perfect dessert that is not too sweet. If you don’t like cinnamon, walk away, I on the other hand, am in love with it.
Cheers!
