Move over Talisker, there’s another distillery in town. Torabhaig is the second licensed distillery on the Isle of Skye.
The farmstead rehabbed for this distillery sits by the Allt Breacach and Allt Gleann which feeds the distillery with its spring water. It took them 4 years to restore the building before their opening in January 2017.
The whisky is made with a mix of concerto and laureate malted barley (at77PPM). It’s aged in first-fill bourbon and refilled whisky barrels. It’s bottled at 17PPM residual and drawn from small batches of no more than 30barrels. This bottle is the 2nd edition.

Not going to lie, I’m a sucker for peated whiskies. They’re still my favorite whiskies to drink and this one was no exception. I had the chance to sample this whisky and loved it so much that we purchased a bottle. We finally had a chance to open it up this weekend after a cold rainy day.
This whisky is rugged in all the right ways. It’s very peated and you get the normal smoke and brine notes you would expect from these types of whisky. What surprised me were the zesty notes. Those notes give this whisky a sort of refreshing and clean taste. The zest is what lingered on my tongue and what has made it uniquely different from all the other peated whiskies we own.
Personally, I love it! It’s a great addition to our collection. It’s for those who truly enjoy peated whiskies and if you don’t, then walk away.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
