Found North Batch 001 16 Year Cask Strength Rye Whisky

Here’s a new brand brought to us by brothers Zach & Nick Taylor. Found North currently has two products under their portfolio:

Batch 001 16 Year Cask Strength Rye Whisky (66% Rye; 30% Corn; 4% Barley) with an ABV of 58.1%. Cost $109

Batch 002 16 year Cask Strength Whiskey with an ABV of 64.9 (80% Corn; 19% Rye; 1% Barley). Cost $114

At these prices… I think it important to try before you buy. We had the chance to try both, thanks to Norfolk Wine and Spirits for that opportunity. We ended up purchasing the rye. As rye fans it’s the one our palates enjoyed the most.

The whiskey is sourced from Canada and blended to create the whiskies above. The blended whiskies are between 16-20 years, as you know, it’s always the youngest whisky represented on the label. The whiskies are then blended in Hungarian Oak. Hungarian oak isn’t only a good option cost wise but also because the quality has vastly improved over the years. It’s simply an option that gives the whisky a different tasting profile.

Nose: sweetness, oak, rye, spices
Palate: cinnamon, spices, vanilla, caramel and sweetness
Finish: warm, spices and cayenne

I had the chance of meeting Nick Taylor at a whisky event. His level of whisky knowledge was top notch but what was more impressive was his passion for the industry. When this released, I knew the products would be good and I was not disappointed.

This whisky is delicious! It’s warming from start to end with notes of spices, vanilla and cayenne. It’s smooth with light notes of sweetness.

Here’s the thing, if you are a rye whisky fan, this tasting profile will taste familiar to you. You’ll taste and quickly think, hey I have something similar at home and you probably aren’t wrong, but in my opinion there is something still quite unique about this whisky. It’s a cask strength rye that isn’t harsh.

This is a good, quality buy if you are looking to dip into rye whiskies. If you own all the rye whiskies under the sun, you probably have something that tastes like this whisky so, maybe you should opt for their Batch 002 which was also, equally amazing.

Cheers

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
