Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye Whisky

This is the whisky that was named whisky of the year in “Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2021.” Up until now, I can’t really recall any other Canadian whisky I’ve had prior to this one other than, Crown Royal. And let me tell you, Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye is pretty darn delicious.

This Alberta Premium is made with 100% rye and bottled at 66% ABV. We purchased this bottle at $74, which is retail price. So if you aren’t a rye or a cask strength fan look away now. Also, if someone is charging more than $100… I’d also walk away.

Nose: wood and vanilla

Palate: vanilla, caramel, oak, rye and spices

Finish: warming that mellows down to smooth notes of vanilla and spice

Before I get into my thoughts, I did a blind taste test with the following whiskies: Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye Whisky, WhistlePig Straight Rye Whiskey 15 Years and Sazerac Rye Straight Rye Whiskey. The one I chose of my favorite was Sazerac Rye Straight Rye Whiskey followed by the Alberta and then the WhistlePig. Now this doesn’t mean I didn’t like the Alberta. One is mellower with a complete different palate than the other.

The Alberta is not for the faint of heart. It is warming, full of spices and does have a bit of bite that mellows down into sweet and vanilla notes. I think this is a very good whisky. As a person that enjoys rye whisky, I think this is a must try. As a fan of whisky in general I think this is a great whisky but, I do have other whiskies in my collection I personally enjoy more.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
