We are creeping into September which means the whisky drinking months are upon us so, weekly posts will soon resume. Plus, my boyfriend and I will be traveling to Scotland this fall so I will have an abundance of new content since we plan to visit as many distilleries as possible.
But before I get to writing about all that Scottish whisky, let me tell you about this little gem of an Irish whiskey we recently stumbled across.
Flaming Leprechaun was co-founded by a local Massachusetts guy, Jack Walsh. Yes, we all know that for Irish whiskey to be called Irish whiskey it must be distilled in Ireland. And, although their local location is here in Franklin, MA., this pot still Irish whiskey is distilled in Dundalk, Ireland by Malcolm Brown Ltd.
Their range is composed of whiskey, cinnamon spirit, gin, rum and vodka. Each product features a different leprechaun. The leprechauns featured in the bottles are such: King Ultan Irish Whiskey, Fintan Fiery Cinnamon, Ronan Gin Brendan Rum and Lorcan Vodka.
Out of the range I had a chance to try both their King Ultan’s Irish Whiskey and Fintan Fiery Cinnamon. For the purposes of this blog I am only going to be talking about the blended Irish whiskey.
Tasting Notes
Nose: wood, toffee and notes of sweetness
Palate: oak, peach, slightly sweet and notes of spice
Finish: smooth and zesty
Let’s be honest, had I walked by this bottle in the liquor store I might have overlooked it. Thankfully I had the chance to try it out during a tasting and let me tell you, this whiskey is quite fantastic. It is smooth, well blended and sweet without it being overly sweet.
It’s simply an everyday whiskey or one to use in cocktails. At a price of around $35 it doesn’t necessarily hurt the wallet. I have bought Irish whiskies for far more that have turn out to be crap while this one is amazingly great.
This is one of those whiskies that you think you aren’t going to like (yes, this is exactly how I felt) and are polite enough to try it, but the minute you taste it, you are beyond surprised on how good it tastes. It’s quality whiskey that is certainly worth trying.
Cheers!
Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different! Although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it and make up their own minds.
