When I think of rye whisky, Crown Royal is definitely not a brand I think about. That changed this past weekend when in conversation with Frank from the Omni Parker. He shared with us that his current favorite rye was Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye. I think both my boyfriend and I laughed when we heard this, that is until we tasted it.
Here we had a blended rye that was not only smooth and delicate, but was not punching us in the face as we drank it.
Tasting Notes
Nose: spices and wood
Palate: oak, vanilla, spices and subtle notes of pepper
Finish: smooth, light and very delicate
This product excites me because it’s a good way for those who are afraid to try rye whisky, to try a 90% rye whisky that they will actually enjoy without being put off. You can drink this on it’s own or in a cocktail (I think it could make an amazing Manhattan).
Is this the best rye whisky in the world? No, I don’t believe it is by any means, but it’s a drinkable rye that tastes good and is affordable when you compare that other rye whisky prices out there. At a cost of $30-$40 you can’t go wrong.
I would highly recommend this product to those who want to try a rye for the first time or try a rye that isn’t too strong. I myself plan on purchasing a bottle to add to my collection and I think it’s a whisky many would enjoy.
Cheers!
PS: Wishing all those in the US a Happy Columbus Day and for all my Canadian readers, Happy Thanksgiving.
