Willett Single Barrel Rye Whiskey

Since I didn’t like the last American Whiskey I wrote about, Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey http://wp.me/p3Zt2k-3n  I wanted to give you all something American that I did in fact enjoy and made me smile this past week.

Last Friday was an extremely cold day in Boston. After work we went into Sweet Cheeks Q for a drink and I’ll be honest, I had a particular whiskey in mind I wanted to order. Fortunately they were out of stock of that said whiskey and although disappointed the bartender was good enough to recommend something he really enjoys. That happened to be Willett Single Barrel Rye from Kentucky.

As you might have already concluded, my disappointment was short lived.  Willett Single Barrel Rye was a great way to easily warm up from the cold.

Before I get into the actual drinking experience, I want to point out to those non whisk(e)y/bourbon drinkers that I truly believe that American whiskey and bourbon distillers have vastly improved the quality and taste of their products. A few years back, if you would have asked me what I’d prefer to drink I would have said that I was solely a Scotch single malt drinker. That is not the case anymore. Although still a Scotch drinker, I’ve been extremely impressed with all the amazing tasting American whiskies and bourbon. Willett Single Barrel Rye does not fall short of that amazement.

I’ll explain something else further to those non drinkers looking to learn more, by law in order for a whiskey to be considered a Rye; it has to have 51% rye in its mash (grain mixtures), as opposed to a bourbon that has to have 51% or more corn in their mash to be considered bourbon.

Now on the actual drinking experience, this to me off course was the best part.

Experience:

Nose: Smelled Woodsy
Palate: Slight burn but the whiskey was extremely smooth, I did taste oak with hints of sweetness. It was balanced and fresh.

Willett Single Barrel Rye was a very satisfying, delicious whiskey. It was a very good recommendation made to me by the bartender and now I would like to recommend to anyone that hasn’t had it before. So if you do try it, let me know your thoughts.

Finally, as you we get closer to the Christmas Holiday if you are traveling, safe travels. If in those travels you try something you’ve never tried before or something recommended to you worth a try, drop me a note on the comments section and tell me about it.

Cheers!

Note: The contents on my blog are solely my opinion. To me every palate is different so although I may or may not like a product, I always recommend for people to try it first before making up their own minds.
