A couple of weeks ago, I attended a tasting event at Norfolk Wine & Spirits in Norfolk, MA, featuring Nc’Nean Organic Single Malt Scotch. Nc’Nean was founded by Annabel Thomas in the village of Drimnin on the Morvern Peninsula along Scotland’s west coast. What sets this distillery apart from many other single malt Scotch whiskies is its commitment to being fully organic.
During the tasting, I sampled several Nc’Nean expressions: the Flagship (46% ABV), Huntress Lemon Meadow (48.5%), Quiet Rebels Amy (48.5%), Quiet Rebels Simon (48.5%), and the Cask Strength expression (59%). In addition, we were able to include a few bonus tastes, notably Huntress Orchard and Quiet Rebels Sarah.
What may come as a surprise is that this was the first tasting I’ve attended where I genuinely loved every single expression I sampled—yes, everyone. That has never happened before. To be fair, the one exception was Quiet Rebels Sarah, but only because it’s an organic oat liqueur rather than a whisky. All the whiskies themselves were outstanding, and if this level of quality continues, I’m more than willing to pay a little extra for organic expressions. I even brought one home. While I usually gravitate toward cask strength whiskies, that instinct didn’t win out this time—I chose the Flagship instead. So, let’s get into it.
Nose: Peaches, apples, and vanilla
Palate: Bright notes of apricots, peaches, vanilla and light nutty undertones
Finish: Gently sweet, with notes of spice, ginger and malt
Cost: $85 (what we paid)
The Flagship is outstanding. I purchased this one because it feels perfectly suited for this time of year. As the days grow warmer, this expression really shines—bright, fruit-forward, lightly sweet, and balanced with just the right touch of spice. It’s not too heavy, yet substantial enough to enjoy on a mild spring day. It works beautifully neat, but it also has the versatility to hold up in a cocktail. I’ve completely fallen for this brand. Across the board, these expressions are incredibly well executed, and if you’re looking for high-quality organic whisky, Nc’Nean is worth exploring. While the bottles are priced a bit higher, the quality more than justifies the premium.
Cheers!
